Have a Wild Day Out with the BBC's Springwatch, Grange Park, Omagh, Saturday 5th June 2010

The BBC is set to inspire new wildlife heroes to do something for nature this summer in a Springwatch season of events and programmes including a brand new series of the popular nightly series hosted by Kate Humble, Chris Packham, Simon King and Martin Hughes-Games (BBC Two from Monday 31 May 2010 at 8pm).

The free event marks the International Year of Biodiversity 2010 promoting the importance of protecting a wide range of species across the UK and around the world. The Springwatch Wild Day Out will be encouraging biodiversity in gardens, parks and outside spaces and inspiring people to do something for nature.

The young, and young at heart, can have fun learning how they can save nature in Omagh and become a local wildlife hero!

The Wild Day Out in Omagh will be extra special with the exclusive presence of the BBC Dig In tour and Chris Collins, Blue Peter’s resident gardener. The Dig In team aim to encourage people to grow their own grub, with a seed giveaway, grow you own demonstrations, expert advice and games for all the family.

Omagh District Council is encouraging everyone from the local area to come along to experience Springwatch close to home.  Commenting on the event, the Council Chairman, Councillor Patrick McGowan MBE said “Omagh District Council is delighted to be working with the BBC on the Springwatch Wild Day Out which I believe is an exciting and worthwhile initiative. I would encourage as many people as possible to come along to the Grange Park on Saturday 5 June to find out what they can do to help their local wildlife while at the same time avail of the opportunity to enjoy a great family day out.”

Speaking before the event, Julie Corry, Omagh’s Biodiversity Officer said “This is a great opportunity for people to learn hands on how to help wildlife in their own patch and how to become more sustainable.  With 2010 named as the International Year of Biodiversity, it’s time for everyone to play their part in protecting our environment.”

And, on Sunday 20 June viewers can join Kate, Chris and Martin from the Springwatch team on BBC Two for an inspirational Wild Night In - a two hour fund-raising extravaganza featuring David Attenborough, Graham Norton, Edith Bowman and other celebrities in support of threatened wildlife and wild places through the work of the BBC Wildlife Fund.
