Biodiversity Audit

The District of Moyle is nestled in arguably one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. This beauty comes from the huge amount of biodiversity found in the area. From our many forests and glens to our green fields and blue seas, we have a wealth of habitats in which our wildlife can live and thrive.

Exciting species to look out for on land in the District of Moyle include the red squirrel, otter and badger. Looking into the sky, if you are lucky, you might spot a hen harrier, or a puffin on the Island of Rathlin. And our seas are simply bursting with life! Some of the bigger animals to spot include the common seal, harbour porpoise and a gentle giant, the basking shark.

The biodiversity project in Moyle is just beginning, with the Biodiversity Officer working 1 day a week. The Biodiversity Officer is gathering information on all the biodiversity resources across the District. As you can imagine, this is a huge and fascinating task, considering the number of different habitats, plants and animals found here.

We will use the information gathered to decide what areas need help or protection.

If you have any information regarding an area, plant or animal which you feel is special in the Moyle District, please get in touch with the Biodiversity Officer.
