The Borough of Larne is one of the last remaining strongholds for red squirrels in Northern Ireland. Until recently, this area was largely free from grey squirrels - the red squirrel's arch enemy.
Hammers and nails were flying as local school children pulled out all the stops to build bird boxes, bird feeders and state of the art bug hotels for their local wildlife. The groups put their creations in their school grounds to show local wildlife that it is welcome to live there.
Several alien plant species recently invaded the wildlife pond at Carnfunnock Country Park! Northern Ireland Environment Agency staff confirmed the presence of 3 unwanted plant species which take over the waterways and stop native plants and animals from growing there.
